Teams are to fight to "survive" through multiple rounds of competition in the "Survivor" Florida Keys Fishing Tournament in Islamorada Thursday through Sunday, Aug. 7-10.
Each team of two anglers, or one angler and a guide, is to receive a number that corresponds to a pingpong ball in a hopper. At the beginning of each fishing day, the teams' numbers are drawn to see which teams will be pitted against each other.
The team in each pair that comes in with the largest or longest fish "survives" and stays in the competition the next day.
"Every tournament I run is for charity, but there's no other tournament like this one," said tournament director Sharon Mahoney-Ellenwood.
Target species are bonefish, snook and redfish. Regardless of survival status, all teams can fish all three days and are eligible for daily prizes and contests. In the end, first, second and third prizes are to be award in both the survivor and nonsurvivor category.
The Survivor Tournament registration kicks off at 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, followed by dinner at the Islamorada Fish Company, mile marker (MM) 81.5 bayside.
Fishing is set for Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Daily cocktail receptions with hors d'oeuvres are to be held at the World Wide Sportsman docks, also at MM 81.5 bayside. The final awards banquet is to be held Sunday, Aug. 10, at 7 p.m. at Islamorada Fish Company.
Entry fee is $800 per team, which includes all social events for both anglers. The cost for additional social tickets is to be announced.
Proceeds are to benefit the Shriners Children's Burn Center, Wild Bird Center and Casting for Cats Clinic.
