In the April issue of Sport Fishing, we promised a handy little seasonal guide to fishing Calcasieu Lake. This one was compiled by texasweekendangler.com. As they say, they ain’t no bad time to fish Big Lake (as Calcasieu is locally known), so get out there!
January
Big trout along the shorelines. Redfish along shipping channel.
February
Big trout on north end of lake. Redfish around oyster reefs.
March
Big trout on north end of lake. Keeper trout on reefs. Redfish on south end of lake.
April
Big trout along shorelines. Keeper trout and redfish under birds.
May
Trout and redfish around reefs and under birds. Some redfish along shorelines, as well. Good topwater action.
June
Trout over reefs on south end of lake and around jetties. Redfish along shorelines. Bull reds starting to show around jetties.
July
Trout around deep-water oyster reefs, jetties and along beachfront. Redfish schooled up in lake. Bull reds around jetties. Tripletail starting to show up around short rigs.
August
Trout and reds under schools of shad in lake. Reds along shorelines and around jetties. Spanish mackerel, trout, tripletail and ling (cobia) around short rigs.
September
Trout and reds under schools of birds and around mid-lake reefs. Redfish in passes.
October
Trout and reds under birds, along shorelines and around reefs. Good topwater action. Flounder around cuts and drains.
November
Big trout on flats between fronts. School-size trout and redfish around reefs and under birds.
December
Some bird activity early in the month. Trout around reefs. Redfish all over the lake, around reefs and along shorelines
