The two federal fishery councils that manage South Florida offshore waters — the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council and the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council — have formed a joint panel to address issues specific to this highly prized angling region. The first meeting for this panel is scheduled as a webinar open to all from 12:30 to 4 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 25.
The group will talk about its purpose and will look at specific fisheries issues such as:
- yellowtail and mutton snapper management
- commercial grouper harvest in Monroe County (Florida Keys)
- allocations of fisheries landings in Monroe County (Florida Keys)
- the possibility of establishing a special-management unit that allows for consistent state/federal fishery regulations across South Florida
